James Everett Stuart was born near Bangor, ME, March 24, 1852. In 1860, he migrated to California with his parents across the Isthmus of Panama and settled near Sacramento. He was educated in California schools and studied painting with private instructors. He completed art studies in 1881 under Raymond D. Yelland at the San Francisco School of Design. His first studio was established in Portland, Oregon in 1881. He painted throughout Washington, Oregon and Northern California and in 1886 made the first of his many trips to Yosemite. Later in 1886 he established a NYC studio on West 55th which remained his headquarters until 1890. In 1892, he set up a studio and gallery in Chicago, where it remained until 1912. In 1912 he returned to California, opening a large gallery in San Francisco, where he remained until his death. Stuart made trips to Alaska in 1891, 1897 and 1907.
