Edgar Alwin Payne was born in Washburn, Missouri. He left home when only 14 and supported himself as a house and sign painter. He reached Chicago where he spent a short time at the A.I.C. Other than that brief formal training, he was self-taught and, all considered, this background served well for him to become one of the foremost of the plein air painters of California.

Payne is best known for mountain landscapes in both Europe and California, Laguna Beach seascapes and mounted riders in Canyon de Chelly. Braarud Fine Art is interested in all works by Edgar Payne.
