Sydney Laurence is the most well known of all Alaskan artists. Although born in Brooklyn, NY, Laurence lived and painted in England and Europe from 1890 to 1903, exhibiting at the Paris Salon and with the Royal Society of British Artists. One sees both watercolors and oils from this period. The more desirable of Laurence's works are oils from his Alaskan years, particularly from the late teens until 1929. Subjects vary from Mt. McKinley, caches, landscapes, seascapes, and ship pictures. Original labels on the backs are desirable as well, as are dates on the front. Laurence was not a great figure painter, and figures are usually incidental to the landscape. Braarud Fine Art is interested in Sydney Laurence oils and watercolors from all periods. |
