Although many references list Herman Herzog’s birth year as 1832, he was born in Bremen, Germany on November 15, 1831. A willful and determined youth, he entered the Dusseldorf Academy in 1849, at the age of 17. Herzog gained early success and, through the sale of his paintings, traveled widely and continued his training. His patrons included royalty and nobility throughout Europe. In the late 1860s, Herzog left his native Bremen and settled his family in Philadelphia. He traveled throughout the U.S. and even into Mexico. Having been a prudent investor, Herzog did not have to depend on the sale of his paintings in the U.S. to maintain a comfortable life. Following his death in 1932, his family retained a large group of his paintings, most of which were released to the art market in the 1970s. Although Herzog’s Yosemite paintings are the most sought after, Braarud Fine Art Is interested in all works by Herman Herzog. |
