Colcord "Rusty" Heurlin was born in Christianstad, Sweden, of American parents. Raised in Wakefield, Massachussetts, he took art classes at the Fenway School of Illustration in Boston. Although he went to Valdez in 1916, he served in WWI in Europe and didn't return to Alaska until 1924, making his home in Ester, near Fairbanks. Between WWI and 1924, he worked as an artist-illustrator for New York magazines while living in Westport, Connecticut.

A keen observer of Alaskan life, natives, and wildlife, Heurlin was known for his pastel palette and fall color backgrounds. Paintings are normally signed C. Heurlin. They are rarely titled or dated. Braarud Fine Art is interested in any Alaskan works by C. Heurlin.
