Born January 17, 1830, at Solingen, Germany; died February 18, 1902 in New York City. Raised in New Bedford, Massachussets, Bierstadt studied in Dusseldorf and Rome (1853-1857). In 1858 he made his first visit to the American West and Rocky Mountains. Settling in New York City in 1860, he was elected to the National Academy the same year. He received France's Legion of Honor in 1867. His best known and most important works are the vast landscapes of Western scenes upon which his reputation was made.

Braarud Fine Art is interested in all works by Bierstadt, but will pay a premium for those from Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.
